Why it is difficult

Status, May 2026: Major active conflict in North Kivu (M23 movement holds Goma; Rwandan involvement); Ituri unstable; Lubumbashi, Kinshasa and the south generally safer. Ebola outbreaks recur. UN MONUSCO drawing down. Tourism focuses on three things: Virunga (when access permits), Nyiragongo volcano (when access permits), and “every country” Kinshasa stamp tourism.

Why it is worth visiting

Virunga National Park: mountain gorilla trekking (when open) and Mount Nyiragongo, the world’s largest lava lake. Kinshasa for the African mega-city experience, Boyoma Falls and Congo River boats, Mbandaka rainforest. Increasingly hard to combine in a single trip; pick one corridor.

Practical travel notes

Currency: Congolese franc, but USD widely accepted (clean, post-2013 bills only). Bring USD cash. Equity BCDC ATMs in Kinshasa work for Visa. SIM: Vodacom from kiosks (CDF 2,000) - 10GB data USD 15, works through Bas-Congo and Kinshasa but not Mbandaka. Orange SIM in Mbandaka unreliable. Language: French + Lingala (Kinshasa), Swahili (east). Security: do not photograph in port areas or near uniforms. Plain-clothes police are common. Carry copies of passport and visa, never the originals.

Access and logistics

Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis), Kenya Airways (via Nairobi), Air France (CDG-FIH), Turkish, RwandAir, Brussels Airlines. SN Brussels is the historical Belgian carrier and the most reliable Western connection. Kinshasa - Symphonie des Arts, Academie des Beaux-Arts, the Lola ya Bonobo sanctuary day-trip, music scene around Matonge. Lower Congo (Bas-Congo) - Zongo Falls, Kisantu Botanical Garden. Lubumbashi - quieter, copperbelt entry from Zambia. Day trip to the Lubudi Falls. Virunga (Goma) - gorillas at Bukima and the Nyiragongo overnight summit hike. Confirm operational status of the park before flying to Goma; closed periodically due to M23. Mbandaka and Tumba region - slow-boat rainforest options.

Safety considerations

Treat security as the core planning constraint. Avoid improvising routes, keep a conservative schedule, and re-check local conditions immediately before travel.

Visa or permit notes

Online e-visa launched but unreliable; embassy applications still safest. Easiest options reported in the archive: Washington DC (issued in days for US nationals), Pretoria, Lubumbashi (entry from Zambia), and - unusually - Bujumbura, Burundi: USD 200 single entry / USD 250 multiple entry typical, 3 months. Tourist visa for Virunga only is also available via the Virunga National Park website (visitvirunga.org) - only valid for entry at the Bunagana / Goma point, only for park visits, and only when Goma is open (currently complicated by M23 control).
