Why It Is Worth Visiting

Whale-swimming season (July-November) - Vava’u group is one of the very few places in the world where you can legally swim alongside humpbacks. Eua Island’s sea cliffs and limestone caves. Ha’apai’s deserted white-sand atolls. Royal palaces in Nuku’alofa. The Tongatapu cultural heritage. Strict Sundays.

Practical Travel Notes

Currency: Tongan pa’anga (TOP). ATMs work; banks have long queues, use Western Union for cash exchange (archive tip - “0 people in line”). SIM: Digicel Tonga from the terminal. ~TOP 20 for 75GB starter. Drone permit needed - sign at the airport (archive notes). Many places don’t serve breakfast - bring snacks.

Access And Logistics

Tongatapu (TBU): Fiji Airways from Nadi (1.5 hrs), Air New Zealand (AKL), Virgin Australia (SYD), Talofa Airways (APIA). Archive (March 2024): Fiji Airways NAN -> TBU, 2 hours. ATMs and Digicel SIM kiosk inside the terminal. Blowholes at Houma (south coast Tongatapu) - best at high tide. Ha’amonga Trilithon (the “Tonga Stonehenge”). Anahulu Cave swimming hole. Royal Tombs and Royal Palace (no entry; view from gate). Ferries Tongatapu -> ‘Eua (1 hour). Inter-island flights Real Tonga Airlines (often delayed/cancelled). Sundays in Tonga (the warning) Per the archive: “Sundays in Tonga are locked down much more than Samoa. Everyone appeared to be closed. Evergreen Chinese Restaurant was one of two restaurants on the island I found which was open.” Whale season Vava’u Jul-Nov: Whale Swim Tonga, Vava’u Adventures, Dolphin Pacific Diving. USD 200-280/day, max 4 swimmers in water at one time per regulations. Rainy season (Dec-Mar): no whales, lots of rain.

Safety Considerations

The main risk is logistical fragility: limited flights, ferry delays, weather disruption, and thin local infrastructure can strand tight itineraries.
